A Message From The Principals

This past Tuesday, FCPS School Board member Mr. Kyle McDaniel, along with Region 3 leaders, visited our campus. During their time here, they were warmly greeted by our Family Ambassadors and student ambassadors, known as First Friends. Both Mr. McDaniel and the regional leadership were highly impressed by the exceptional work our staff is doing to support our students.

This visit aligns with our commitment to the first pillar of the district’s Strategic Plan: ensuring every student develops foundational academic skills, curiosity, and a joy for learning that will lead to success from Pre-K through 12th grade. At Fort Belvoir Elementary, we strive to create an environment where students not only excel academically but also cultivate a lifelong passion for learning. The dedication and collaborative efforts of our staff are essential in fostering this growth and equipping students with the skills they need for their future success.

As a token of appreciation, the First Friends presented Mr. McDaniel and the Region 3 leaders with special gifts, including an Army coffee cup and distinguished monogrammed Fort Belvoir Elementary ink pens. These thoughtful gestures highlighted our school’s deep connection to the military community and reflected our pride in fostering an inclusive and supportive learning environment.

Together we are and will continue to be Fort Belvoir strong!

We are excited to share some great news! Our students have shown tremendous growth in math after completing their first benchmark assessment. We are aligned with the FCPS target goal of having overall student mastery within 80% or greater. Our students are starting off the year strong in math! This success is a testament to the hard work and dedication of both our students and teachers.

One of the key challenges we have been addressing is how to remove the barriers that come with testing on a computer. While there is still more work to be done, I want to take a moment to recognize the incredible effort our teachers have put into refining their instructional practices. Students are actively engaged in their lessons and are asking each other high level thinking questions. Additionally, they are using manipulatives to model their thinking. Our teachers’ commitment to student success is evident, and it is paying off in our students' academic growth. Thank you for your continued support, and we look forward to even more success ahead!

Blue Star Welcome Week!

This week, our school community celebrated Blue Star Welcome Week, a special time to honor and welcome new students and families to Fort Belvoir. To make the occasion even more engaging, we hosted a friendly competition to identify which branch of the military our students are connected with. Each student placed a white cotton ball in a container labeled with a military branch. At the end of the week, the Army container emerged as the winner for our school, while there was an exciting tie for second place between the Navy and the Air Force.

We are thrilled to welcome all of our new students and families to Fort Belvoir Primary Elementary, and we look forward to building fun and lasting memories together. This is just the beginning of a wonderful school year filled with community, learning, and connection!

Families can learn more about additional resources offered by Fairfax County Public Schools linked HERE.

Coffee and Conversations with the Principal

This past week, parents joined Dr. Jemison, the principal of Fort Belvoir Primary, at Starbucks for an open conversation about the school. The gathering provided an opportunity for parents to share their positive feedback, as well as suggestions for areas of growth in the school’s progress. Dr. Jemison appreciated the chance to listen and engage directly with the families, fostering a sense of community and collaboration.

Dr. Jemison will be hosting another open conversation with parents on Tuesday, October 8th from 10:30 - 11:00 am at the same location. He encourages all families to attend, as he values their input and is committed to building strong, positive relationships between the school and its community.

🗓️ Attendance Tip: Scheduling Family Trips or Events

Good attendance is an important life skill that will help students succeed in school and beyond.

When planning trips or family events, refer to the FCPS calendar and try to use weekends and school holidays. Every day of learning is a day toward success. Keep in mind that absences add up quickly. Students absent 10% of the school year (or just two days per month) are considered chronically absent.

When possible, schedule appointments for your child outside of school hours. If your child needs to miss school because of an illness or another reason, we are kindly asking families to report the absence.

Watch this video with tips on understanding the FCPS school year calendar and visit the Attendance webpage for additional information. Attend today, achieve tomorrow!

Immunizations

FCPS has partnered with the Fairfax County Health Department to provide immunization clinics on early release Mondays for elementary school students and at middle and high schools this fall. Safeway is also hosting immunization clinics for all FCPS students.

Introducing our Star Students!

We are excited to celebrate our amazing students! Twice a month, we will be spotlighting our Star Students. These exceptional individuals will have their pictures proudly displayed on the wall for everyone to admire, and their names will be announced on our morning news. To earn the title of Star Student, we are asking students to make a SPLASH.

SPLASH is an acronym that reflects our core values, guiding us to success in school and beyond! Stay tuned to see who will make a SPLASH next!

October 2nd is National Custodian Appreciation Day, and we are excited to celebrate our incredible custodial team! Their dedication and hard work ensure that our school remains clean, safe, and welcoming for everyone. We are so grateful for their continuous efforts in keeping our building in excellent condition, and we encourage you to join us in showing them our appreciation. Families are encouraged to send warm words of appreciation or flowers.

Let's make sure they feel valued for all they do!

We are thrilled to celebrate Blue Star Welcome Week! This week, families and students new to our school, as well as to Fort Belvoir, were greeted with a warm welcome to kick off the festivities. Each day, we are honoring the different branches of service, recognizing the men and women who serve. It is imperative that our families feel embraced and supported as they join our school community, and we are committed to making this a memorable and welcoming experience for all.

As the son of a military officer and the brother of a retired military officer, I deeply appreciate the courage and resilience of students who miss their loved ones while they are away protecting our nation. Please take a moment to watch this Blue Star Welcome Week message from our Superintendent, Dr. Reid.

We encourage everyone in our school community to join us in extending a warm welcome to the new military families joining Fort Belvoir. Together, let’s show our support for these families and continue building a strong, caring community.

A Message From The Principal, Dr. Jemison

We are thrilled to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month here at Fort Belvoir Primary! Each year, Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) and Americans across the country observe National Hispanic Heritage Month, celebrating the rich histories, vibrant cultures, and significant contributions of Americans whose ancestors hail from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America. The month-long celebration begins on September 15 and continues through October 15, offering a unique opportunity to highlight the diversity that enriches our community.

In honor of this special occasion, we warmly invite all families to join us on October 8th from 2:00 - 3:00 pm in the Family Liaison Office for a festive food potluck. This event is an excellent opportunity for military-connected Hispanic families to come together, share their cultural heritage, and build lasting connections. It is also a wonderful time for other families in our community to embrace and learn more about Hispanic traditions, all while enjoying delicious food.

We will have local vendors, lively music, and additional cultural contributions to make the event even more exciting. Families of Hispanic descent are encouraged to wear traditional clothing, adding to the vibrant atmosphere of the celebration. We look forward to coming together as a community to celebrate the rich cultural tapestry that makes Fort Belvoir Primary a special place for all!

Together we are and will continue to be Fort Belvoir strong!

🤒 When a Student Should Stay Home From School

Whether students miss school because of illness or any other reason, missing school leads to learning loss.

Help your child succeed by encouraging them to attend as many days as possible, but do make sure your child stays home if they are sick. Visit FCPS’ website for information on when to keep your child at home.

If your child has a chronic illness, make sure to notify their teacher so that support can be provided if needed. Also, keep an open line of communication with your school's public health staff.

Sibshops is fundamentally about fostering connections among siblings of children with disabilities. It offers a community-building space where participants engage in fun physical and creative activities while also having meaningful discussions. Through games, art, and conversation, Sibshops creates an opportunity for siblings to bond, share experiences, and support one another. The program normalizes the unique experiences of being a ‘sib’ and helps participants feel validated, understood, and connected to others in similar situations. Ultimately, Sibshops strengthens their sense of community and provides a safe space for them to express their thoughts and feelings.

At Sibshops, participants engage in a wide variety of activities based on the Sibshops model. These include recreational games like tag or balloon races, where siblings can run, jump, and have fun together. They also participate in creative activities like making glitter jars for emotional regulation or crafting frames to hold pictures of themselves and their siblings. Additionally, there are discussion sessions that offer the chance for siblings to share their thoughts and provide peer support regarding their shared experiences. Every workshop also includes a “snacktivity,” making the experience both enjoyable and nurturing

A Message From The Principal, Dr. Jemison

This past Wednesday, as a nation, we honored Patriot Day and our Gold Star families. At Fort Belvoir Primary Elementary School, we took the time to educate our students on the significance of this day and what it means to be a proud American. Through lessons and activities, students were taught the importance of unity, sacrifice, and the values that shape our nation. Every day, students stand and say the Pledge of Allegiance, but on this special day, we emphasized the deeper meaning behind the words they recite, especially within the context of the sacrifices made by so many.

Although our school is located on a military installation, it remains essential that our students understand what makes our country a great place for all. By discussing the diversity, freedom, and opportunities that define the United States, we hope to foster a sense of pride and appreciation in each student. In addition to our lessons, mini United States flags were placed throughout our campus as a visual reminder of the sacrifices made by our Gold Star families, those who have lost a loved one in service to our country.

For those unfamiliar with the term, a Gold Star family is one that has experienced the loss of a service member who died in the line of duty. As a school, we feel a deep sense of pride in honoring both the families who continue to serve and those who have made the ultimate sacrifice. By teaching our students about Patriot Day and its significance, we aim to instill in them an understanding of the values and sacrifices that help protect the freedoms we enjoy.

Families can find additional talking points linked HERE. All FCPS students are encouraged to participate in service learning as it supports Portrait of a Graduate (POG) attributes and social and emotional learning (SEL) skills

Together we are and will continue to be Fort Belvoir strong!

On September 17th, schools across our country will come together to celebrate and learn about the United States Constitution. We believe in creating meaningful opportunities that ignite their interest, helping them understand the importance of our nation's founding document in ways that resonate with their budding minds.

Resources are listed on the U.S. Department of Education’s Commemorating Constitution Day and Citizenship Day website. Information about citizenship and civics is also available at other websites such as the National Constitution Center.

FCPS Social Studies has developed a Constitution and Citizenship Day resource to support teachers and families with specific ideas for social studies instruction.

September is Attendance Awareness Month

Some of the ways parents can help their children create healthy routines and a habit of getting to school on time every day include:

  • Set a regular bedtime and morning routine. (Need help? Download this checklist in English or Spanish.)
  • Lay out clothes and pack backpacks the night before.
  • If your child seems anxious about going to school, talk to teachers, school counselors, or other parents for advice on how to make them feel comfortable and excited about learning.
  • Develop back-up plans for getting to school if something comes up. Call on a family member, a neighbor, or another parent.
  • When possible, avoid medical appointments or extended trips when school is in session.

On Wednesday, September 11th, our nation will pause to honor those impacted by the horrific events that unfolded on September 11, 2001. We now know it as Patriot Day. This day marks a somber moment in our history, where we remember the lives lost, the bravery of the first responders, and the resilience of the American spirit in the face of tragedy. It is a day to reflect on the strength and unity that emerged from such an unimaginable event, and to pay tribute to the many who have served and sacrificed in its aftermath.

At Fort Belvoir Primary Elementary School, we have the distinct honor and privilege of educating the children of our brave soldiers. These families embody the courage and dedication that September 11th calls us to remember. This responsibility is something we do not take for granted. Each day, we are reminded of the values of service, resilience, and sacrifice that are carried forward in the hearts of our students. We remain committed to fostering a learning environment that not only values academic excellence but also honors the legacy of those who defend our freedoms.

September 11 National Day of Service

With the upcoming 23rd anniversary of September 11, FCPS acknowledges the loss of life, the heroism of our first responders, and the resilience of our country. The September 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance, also called Patriot Day, is a chance to reflect and act in service to others to honor those who were injured or killed in the terrorist attacks.

All FCPS students are encouraged to participate in service learning as it supports Portrait of a Graduate (POG) attributes and social and emotional learning (SEL) skills.

Early Release Monday: 1:00 pm Dismissal on September 16

We will have our first 1:00 pm dismissal on Monday, September 16. There are some students who have a childcare hardship and will be supervised at school until 4:00pm. For those students, there will be a second dismissal at that time.

Please make sure your child knows how they are going home on that Monday. We will be confirming with families this coming week to ensure that the plan you indicated in our survey still matches your intended plan.

Dismissal 1 will be at 1:00pm. Students whose families are using this dismissal time will go home by Kiss & Ride, walking or riding the bus.

Dismissal 2 will be at 4:00pm for those students whose families indicated that supervision was needed. Again, there will be a Kiss & Ride, walkers dismissal and bus service at this time.

Thank you in advance for your flexibility and communication. If you have any questions and/or changes to your plan for September 16, we need to know them now. Please contact our Office Team at 703-781-2700.

🍎 Make Every Day Count! The Importance of Attendance

As you plan upcoming trips and other family events, please remember the importance of sending your child to school every day. Review the FCPS School Year Calendar and try to plan any time away during breaks from school.

Children who show up for school regularly develop fundamental reading and math skills while building a habit of good attendance that will carry them into college and careers. Research shows that children who were chronically absent (missing 18 days or more) in kindergarten and first grade were far less likely to read proficiently at the end of third grade.

Learn how families can help form good attendance habits.

SEL Assemblies

We are making a big SPLASH! This week, we kicked off our school wide Social Emotional Learning (SEL) assemblies for our first-grade students. The purpose of these assemblies is to ensure that our students fully understand the expectations we have for them while at school. As a community, we are committed to using Responsive Classroom strategies. These strategies focus on creating a learning environment where students and teachers collaborate and everyone feels a strong sense of belonging.

Next week, we will continue this important work with our second-grade students. Since implementing these strategies, we’ve already seen a noticeable increase in student engagement. Our school is becoming a place where students feel empowered to learn and grow, and we are excited to see the continued positive impact this approach will have on our entire school community.

A Message From The Principal, Dr. Jemison

What an amazing kickoff these past two weeks have been for our staff and families! Our team is brimming with enthusiasm and ready to teach the incredible students of Fort Belvoir Primary. Last week, we engaged in several team-building activities that not only strengthened our bond as a staff but also prepared us to welcome our students with open arms. These activities set the tone for an extraordinary year ahead.

One of the highlights of our kickoff was a special moment that showcased the unique setting of our school. We took our staff picture in front of a gold-top helicopter, a symbol of military excellence and service. These helicopters have been used by several of our nation’s military dignitaries, and it was an honor to incorporate this piece of history into our celebration. Standing in front of such a powerful symbol was a reminder of the significant role our school plays within the Fort Belvoir community.

On this day, Fort Belvoir truly rolled out the red carpet for our teachers, creating an experience like no other. It’s a privilege to be part of the only FCPS school located on a military base, where we have the distinct pleasure of teaching the children of those who serve our country. We are excited for the year ahead and look forward to continuing our mission of providing an exceptional education to our nation’s greatest students.

Together we are and will continue to be Fort Belvoir strong!

Dr. LaZedrick (Zed) Jemison, Principal

Principal Talks at Starbucks Fort Belvoir Primary

We are thrilled to invite you to join us for conversations with our proud principal, Dr. Jemison, at Starbucks! As a valued partner of Fort Belvoir, the Starbucks located at the Exchange has generously agreed to accommodate our school community. Each month, Dr. Jemison, along with our Fort Belvoir Elementary Family Ambassadors, will host an informal gathering where friends and families can come together to hear about the wonderful things happening at our school.

Our goal is to strengthen and maintain a positive relationship with the Fort Belvoir community. We encourage everyone to join us over a cup of coffee or tea as we share ideas, experiences, and ways to ensure our children remain Fort Belvoir strong while standing in excellence!

We look forward to learning from each other and continuing to build a bright future for our students. Please look for our first social to take place next month.

Amazon Military and Operation Homefront

A big thank you to Amazon Military and Operation Homefront for their generous donations of school supplies! Your support means so much to our students and staff, and it will make a real difference in ensuring that our children have what they need to succeed. Our team is extremely appreciative of the items, which will help create a positive and well-prepared start to the school year for our students.

We were thrilled to have our PTO President, Family Ambassadors, Family Liaison, and both Fort Belvoir Elementary School(s) principals present to accept the donations on behalf of both school communities. These contributions highlight the importance of community partnerships in supporting our military-connected families, and we are grateful for the continued collaboration and commitment to our students’ success.

A Message From The Principals

We are thrilled to welcome so many new faces to Fort Belvoir Primary this past week! The sight of smiling faces entering the building for the first time brought immense joy to our hearts. From the moment students stepped into their classrooms, teachers ensured they were engaged and excited to learn. This week is a pivotal one for students and families, as we focus on establishing strong, supportive relationships that will guide us throughout the year. We are committed to building connections grounded in trust and love, fostering an environment where every student feels valued.

In addition to the warm welcome of our new students, we were honored to have FCPS Region 3 leaders visit our school. Mr. Ray Lonnett, Assistant Superintendent, Mr. Jesse Kraft, Executive Principal, and Dr. Ingrid Bynum, Executive Principal, took the time to show their appreciation for the dedication and hard work of our staff. Their visit was a reminder of the strong support we have from our leadership, and it reinforced our commitment to providing the best education and experience for our students.

To further commemorate their visit, they presented our school with a map of the Region, symbolizing the collective effort and shared vision we all have for the success of our students. This gesture is a testament to the collaborative spirit that defines Fort Belvoir Primary, and we are excited to continue building on this foundation as we move forward together.

Together we are and will continue to be Fort Belvoir strong!

Dr. Jemison, Principal

Ms. Flint, Assistant Principal

Ms. Gordon, Assistant Principal

The American Red Cross at Fort Belvoir Primary

We are thrilled to announce that three brand-new bicycles have been generously donated to our school by the American Red Cross. Shawn Bell, the Regional Program Manager, personally presented these bikes to us in a wonderful show of community support. Our Family Ambassadors, along with Dolores Elliott, joined Dr. Jemison in expressing a heartfelt gratitude for this generous contribution.

As a school, we are now excitedly brainstorming ways to reward one of our deserving students with one of these bikes. It is important for our students to see that hard work, dedication, and perseverance are recognized and celebrated. We look forward to seeing the positive impact this donation will have on our school community.

Spirit Day Kickoff!

We are thrilled to kick off our first Spirit Day of the school year on Thursday, August 29th, and Friday, September 6th! To celebrate the start of college football and the NFL season, we invite all students to show their team spirit by wearing their favorite college or NFL team apparel.

Let’s come together in school pride and NFL excitement—whether you're cheering for your hometown heroes or supporting a team from afar, it’s time to gear up and represent!

Making a BIG Difference at the Fort

PENFED, an organization dedicated to supporting military families, has generously collected back-to-school supplies for both Fort Belvoir Primary and Upper Elementary Schools. We are deeply appreciative of their donations, which will greatly benefit our students and their families as they prepare for a successful school year. Their support makes a tangible difference in our community, easing the burden on families and ensuring our students have the resources they need to thrive.

We are especially proud of our Family Ambassadors, who were there to accept the donations on behalf of our families. Their presence underscores the strong connections between our school and the military community we serve. PENFED, with its mission of being a beacon of support for military families, continues to stand by our side, offering help in many facets of life. We are incredibly grateful for their continued partnership and dedication to our military families.

Emergency Drill Procedures

Ensuring the safety of students and staff is a top priority for FCPS. Each school is equipped with an emergency preparedness plan designed to respond to incidents such as fires, tornadoes, and other emergencies. In accordance with state law, schools are required to conduct regular safety drills, including fire drills and lockdown drills, throughout the school year. As part of this requirement, schools must notify parents and guardians at least 24 hours before a lockdown drill is conducted, although the specific date and time do not need to be disclosed in advance.

For the safety and well-being of all students, the first lockdown drill of the school year must occur within the first 20 school days. Preschool and kindergarten students are exempt from participating in the initial drill. It’s possible that your child may come home and share their experience during a drill. We encourage you to have a conversation with your child about the importance of emergency preparedness. To help guide these discussions, please review the frequently asked questions that can support your student before and after the lockdown drills.

Free and Reduced-Price Meal Applications Available

According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), eating breakfast at school is linked to better attendance rates, fewer missed school days, and improved test scores. Students who qualify for free and reduced-price meals can receive breakfast and lunch at school at no cost.

Families in FCPS earning less than 185% of the poverty level can apply for these meal benefits. It’s important to complete the application before the start of each school year. Approved applications may also qualify students for additional benefits.

To avoid paying full price for lunch after October 1, 2024, we strongly encourage families to apply for the Free and Reduced-Price Meal program as soon as possible.

Visit the Free and Reduced-Price Meals webpage linked HERE to apply now!

Early Release Mondays

The Early Release Mondays planned throughout the school year for elementary schools are essential to allow educators time for planning and professional development.  Students will be dismissed 3 hours early seven times throughout the school year and are encouraged to return home via their normal route.  However, we understand there may be a childcare hardship because of the early release Mondays for many of our families.  To resolve these concerns, student supervision will be available for families who need it.

The following dates are planned for Early Release Mondays throughout the school year:

  • September 16
  • October 21
  • November 18
  • February 10, 2024
  • March 10
  • April 21
  • May 12

To help plan for our school’s childcare needs during the early release Mondays, please complete this form: https://forms.gle/EzQR87KfdMWgD8m29 for each of your children who are enrolled at Fort Belvoir Elementary. The form covers the first two early release Mondays, scheduled for September 16, 2024 and October 21, 2024. If you have multiple children, you will need to submit multiple forms. Staff will confirm the after school supervision plan for each student.

Happy First Day of School!

Welcome back to school, everyone! It was wonderful to see so many students and families returning to Fort Belvoir this morning. The energy and excitement in the hallways were contagious as we kicked off another fantastic school year together. Seeing so many familiar faces and meeting new members of our community made this day extra special.

This morning, we had the honor of welcoming COL Stewart, our new Garrison Commander, and his team. They joined us in greeting families as they entered the building, making it a memorable moment for everyone. Our dedicated teachers warmly welcomed students into their classrooms, capturing the joy of the first day with photos that will be cherished for years to come. We are thrilled to start this new chapter together and look forward to an amazing year ahead!

Zones of Regulations at Fort Belvoir Primary

This year, as part of our Social-Emotional Learning, will be implementing an evidenced-based curriculum called The Zones of Regulation. These weekly lessons are designed to support our students in identifying emotions and regulating behaviors to match the "Zone" to the environment. Our goal is to create vertical alignment with our verbiage but more importantly, teach our students a life-long set of skills. The Zones of Regulation is not new to Fort Belvoir Primary as it has been piloted in certain grade levels but this year, it will be a school-wide implementation.

Visiting the School Fort Belvoir Primary

We enjoy having families visit the school for lunch and/or volunteering in the classrooms! Please note for safety reasons, you must have a valid driver’s license, DMV-issued identification or a valid passport in order to enter the building.

Families are permitted to come to school to eat lunch with their child beginning October 1st. During the first weeks of school, we are learning and practicing routines and procedures in the cafeteria while building independence in certain community spaces. For classroom support, parents may speak directly with their child’s teacher to express interest in volunteering.

School Hours/School Year Calendar

As you prepare for the new school year, please note that our school hours are 9:20 am - 4:05 pm. Fort Belvoir Primary welcomes students into the building at 9:00 am daily. Students arriving after 9:20 am should be escorted into the building by an adult and sign the student in.

If possible, we ask that no changes in transportation arrangements be made during the first month of school to ensure students learn their dismissal routine. This extra measure aids us with keeping students safe while exiting the campus. After then, families should notify the front office of changes in dismissal arrangements, please send an email message to [email protected] indicating the change for the day.

We understand that dismissal changes are sometimes necessary or unforeseen after children have arrived at school; however, please do not make changes after 3:30 pm.

Please see the following link HERE, for the updated FCPS school calendar. Families should note, there are student holidays and early release dates scheduled throughout the school year.

For classroom support, parents may speak directly with their child’s teacher to express interest in volunteering.

Back-to-School Night

We are looking forward to welcoming families to our Back-to-School Night. Please note that the Back-to-School Night for the Primary School is on Thursday, September 5th at 6:30pm. This is an opportunity for families to connect, learn about grade level and schoolwide expectations.

📱Cell Phone Policy and Implementation
  • At the May 9 School Board meeting, the School Board adopted the SY 2024-25 SR&R (Regulation 2601.38). They also passed a follow-on motion directing the superintendent to develop and implement a strategic communications plan to inform stakeholders of the expectations contained in the SR&R with respect to cell phone usage.
  • Grade K-6
    • Phones must be silenced and in backpacks for the duration of the school day. Cell phones may be used on campus before and after school only.
    • Smart watches that serve a dual purpose may be worn, but the phone features (texting, Internet viewing, and calls) are to be off when phone use is prohibited.
    • Students are prohibited from using phones, tablets, and other mobile devices in restrooms and locker rooms, unless there is a medical necessity or emergency.
    • With the approval of the principal or their designee, teachers may allow usage of cell phones for instructional activities where they are the most appropriate tool; however, one-to-one FCPS devices should meet most needs.
Technology

All Fort Belvoir Primary students are issued a laptop (Grades 1-2) or an IPad (PreK and K) immediately after school begins. For our students, these devices will remain at school unless there is a specific need for them to go home, such as an extended period of inclement weather or an extended illness.

Students, families, and teachers throughout FCPS are using Schoology (pronounced /SKOO-luh-jee/) as an additional learning management system.

You need a SIS/ParentVue account  to login to Schoology. If you are a new family to Fort Belvoir Primary, please know that we have a technology support staff member onsite to support you. Families are encouraged to contact the front office for additional support. They will have a member of our tech team contact you or meet you in the lobby area.

Once issued their laptops, students can login to Schoology using their FCPS student IDs and passwords. Students new to FCPS will receive this information when laptops are issued to them.

Families will be able to use Schoology to view:

  • You child’s class
  • Your child’s assignments and participation
  • Your child’s calendar
  • Teacher comments, scores, and feedback

We look forward to using Schoology along with your SIS/ParentVue account to strengthen our partnerships throughout the school year. You are welcome to learn more about this learning management system by visiting: https://www.fcps.edu/schoology

Fort Belvoir Family Ambassadors

The Family Ambassadors is a group of Primary staff, parents, and community members who come together monthly to focus on the school’s SIIP. In particular, the Family Ambassadors work to provide guidance and recommendations regarding staffing allocations as it relates to the SIIP, school budget, and school program design, including consultation regarding adjustments that may be made due to pupil-count issues. For specific questions, please direct them to Ms. Vanessa Ganze at [email protected]

Parent Teacher Organization (PTO)

We are highly appreciative of the support we continue to receive from our PTO. Every family is encouraged to join the PTO and/or volunteer as well as attend events/meetings sponsored by our amazing PTO.

The PTO’s efforts ensure our students have access to additional instructional materials; technology, field trips, and cultural arts events. Additionally, they host several family events for our school community such as BINGO, Movie Night, etc. If you are interested in volunteering or in taking on a leadership role, small or large, please follow the Fort Belvoir Elementary School PTO’s page on Facebook, read email fanout messages to all families and attend PTO meetings to get involved!

For specific questions, please direct them to our Fort Belvoir Elementary PTO President, Ms. Donna Perkins, at [email protected].

Transportation Changes

All transportation changes must be submitted in writing to the school via email ([email protected]).  Emergencies happen and parents are encouraged to make arrangements and plan for this with friends and neighbors. Changes to a student's dismissal procedures need to be made prior to 3:30 p.m. For your child's safety, the person authorized to pick up the student will need to present a valid photo ID in person for verification purposes.

Bus Information / Arrival / Dismissal

We are strongly encouraging families to start using the form of transportation they intend to use throughout the school year starting on the first day of school. This will help students learn the routines and procedures for arrival and dismissal while causing less confusion for them. Additionally, we want to ensure transportation has accurate numbers of students accessing the bus so that we have the appropriate number of buses.

ParentVUE: Specific bus information, such as pick-up and drop-off times and bus stop locations, can be found within FCPS’ ParentVUE app. Please check this information in the app before the first day, as transportation may continue to make minor changes.

Arrival/Dismissal (Primary): All students in grades 1 and 2 who ride the bus or walk will enter  through Door 1. At the end of each day, PreK and grades 1 and 2 walkers will check out with a staff member at Door 1. Kindergarten walkers will check out with a staff member at the external library door, near Door 8. All Kiss & Ride students will arrive and depart through the cafeteria entrance at Door 2. School staff across the campus use an application called “Pick-Up Patrol” to ensure students are checked out and have arrived at the correct dismissal location/bus. Please note that kindergarten students will be accompanied by an adult during arrival and dismissal. Per FCPS policy, kindergarten students must be picked up by students in middle school and above for additional information see link HERE.

All students in the PreK program (Head Start) will need to either ride the bus or be walked to and from the classroom by an adult. Students in the special education preschool program will be met by school staff who will bring them to class.

Kiss & Ride Information

In collaboration with the Fort Belvoir Military Police (MP), we have developed a plan for those accessing Kiss & Ride. This plan is for arrival and dismissal for Primary in order to keep Meeres Road clear for buses to arrive and to maintain safety for our students who are walking home.  As you approach the intersection of Woodlawn Road and Meeres Road, we are asking that you turn right on Woodlawn Road to follow the new traffic pattern for the Primary Kiss & Ride, which will entail looping at the end of Woodlawn Road. Please see the map below. The MPs will be present to direct traffic.

School Meals / Nut-Free Zones

Free and Reduced-Price Meal Applications Available

According to the Centers for Disease Control, eating breakfast at school is associated with better attendance rates, fewer missed school days, and better test scores. Students who qualify for free and reduced-price meals receive breakfast and lunch at school at no cost.

Families in FCPS that are earning less than 185% of the poverty level can receive meals for their students at no cost. Families should complete the application before the start of each school year. Approved applications may also qualify students for additional benefits.

Apply on the Free and Reduced-Price Meals webpage

Fort Belvoir Elementary Campus is “nut-free” in all classrooms, so please do not send in snacks that may contain nut products. In our cafeteria for lunch, students have the option of eating nut products, but we have designated “nut-free” zones which remain nut-free throughout all lunches. Please be mindful of lunches and snacks sent to school so that we may keep all of our Dolphins safe.

Birthday Celebrations

We love celebrating our Dolphins’ birthdays! We are kindly asking families not to send edible birthday treats to school. Instead, we welcome the celebration in other ways, such as having a family member come in and read to the class, or donating a book to the school or classroom.

e-Notify / FCPS News You Choose

e-Notify and FCPS News You Choose is a form of receiving communication from the district as it relates to emergency information, general information, school closings, etc. Messages will be sent via email and/or telephone. It is important that we have your contact email address and phone numbers.

Families are welcome to update contact information throughout the school year, email [email protected] or please fill out an updated emergency care card.

Positive Behavior Support and Students’ Rights and Responsibilities

Fort Belvoir Primary School actively protects a student’s right to learn in an environment that allows them to acquire the best education available.  Students have a responsibility to behave in such a manner that does not interfere with the safety and learning of others. This year we are using a positive behavior approach. Schoolwide expectations and routines were created for common areas across the school.  To address students’ social/emotional development, we incorporate Morning Meetings, Closing circles, and assemblies that focus on behavior and character traits.

Please review FCPS’s policy and definition of bullying HERE. Please notify an administrator, if you feel your child is a victim of bullying.

A copy of the 2024-2025 FCPS Student Rights and Responsibilities (SR&R) handbook can be accessed HERE.  Teachers and administrators will review expectations at school, but we also ask our families to do the same and acknowledge your review of the document in ParentVue. Alternatively, parents may return a signed paper version of the acknowledgement form to the school office.

Attendance

Please call the school by 9:30am when your child is absent from school. It is an expectation for all students to arrive at school on time and to stay throughout the school day. Dropping your child off late and/or picking your child up from school early will severely impact the learning experience as well as disrupt their school day. If possible, we are asking families to schedule medical appointments after school hours. We want to partner with you to ensure your child reaches their full potential.

Report attendance using one of the methods below.

Military Families Information

FCPS has a special webpage to support military families with their transition to our school system. Please visit the site for several helpful information and links.

Welcome COL David J. Stewart

Fort Belvoir Elementary School is excited to welcome the newest United States Army Garrison of Fort Belvoir, COL David J. Stewart. Coming from a family of educators, COL Stewart shares our deep passion for nurturing and educating the next generation of leaders. His dedication to education aligns perfectly with our mission, and he intends to ensure that the partnership between Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) and Fort Belvoir remains strong and impactful.

COL Stewart has expressed his enthusiasm for the upcoming school year and is looking forward to personally welcoming families on the first day of school, Monday, August 19th. His commitment to building a supportive and collaborative environment will undoubtedly contribute to a positive and enriching experience for all of our students and their families. We are confident that COL Stewart's leadership will further enhance the strong community spirit at Fort Belvoir Primary Elementary School as we stand tall in excellence together!

Together we are and will continue to be Fort Belvoir strong!

Popsicles with the Principals!

We really enjoyed seeing so many families come out for our Popsicles with the Principals social. It was a fantastic opportunity to meet and greet our new students and warmly welcome back our returning ones. The smiles and laughter shared throughout the moment were truly heartwarming. Listening to the various adventures that students and their families embarked on over the summer was delightful and gave us all a glimpse into the exciting lives they lead outside of school.

Despite the warm weather, everyone managed to stay cool while savoring their delicious popsicles. The event was a perfect blend of fun and community spirit, reinforcing the strong bond we share here at Fort Belvoir Elementary. We're grateful for the enthusiasm and support from our families, and we're looking forward to many more memorable events in the future.

Mount Vernon Resource Fair

We were thrilled to see so many families at the Mount Vernon Pyramid Resource Fair. This event presented families with an opportunity to gather free school supplies and other items. It also allowed them to learn about other resources available in the area for military families.

We understand that for some of our families, this can be a challenging time, and we hope that the fair provided valuable support and connections. Families are welcome to contact Dolores Eillott, our School Liaison for additional resources at (703)781-2700.

Welcome Back, Fort Belvoir Primary Families!

As we prepare to embark on the 2024-2025 school year, we extend a warm welcome back to each of you. We hope you had a restful and enjoyable summer and are ready for an incredible year ahead.

Like our students, I know what it is like to be a military child. My late father was a Vietnam Veteran and proudly served several years in the United States Army. In addition, my older brother is a retired member of the United States Army and fought in the Iraq War. Additionally, my brother-in-law is a former Airman. As the principal of Fort Belvoir (Primary) Elementary School, I am proud to do my part in ensuring that the children of our service members get a strong and enduring education.

Our theme for this year, “Moving with Intention & Learning with Purpose,” encapsulates our belief in the potential of every student. We know that through collaboration between our students, teachers, staff, and families, we create a community where learning is nurtured and developed. At Fort Belvoir Primary, we continue to prioritize our students and families, ensuring that we remain “Fort Belvoir strong.” Our focus on student success drives all our efforts, and we are dedicated to fostering a supportive and engaging educational experience.

Families, your partnership is essential in aligning our efforts to meet the needs of our students. Together, we can achieve great things and ensure that each student has the opportunity to thrive. We have so much to celebrate this year, and we are looking forward to an amazing school year filled with growth, learning, and success.

Thank you for your continued support and involvement in our school community. Let’s make this year our best yet!

Together we are and will continue to be Fort Belvoir strong!
