We are seeing tremendous growth in literacy across all grade levels, reflecting the dedication of our students, teachers, and families. This year, our School Innovation and Improvement Plan (SIIP) goal for Language Arts is to ensure that by June 2025, the percentage of students in grades K-2 meeting or exceeding the VALLSS screener benchmarks will increase by five percentage points from fall 2024 to spring 2025. This goal reinforces our commitment to building strong foundational literacy skills that will support students throughout their academic journey.

To further strengthen this progress, we encourage families to attend Learning Night on Thursday, March 13th. This event provides a valuable opportunity for families to engage with the literacy and math strategies being introduced to students, fostering collaboration between home and school. It is imperative that all students leave our building performing at or above grade level, and with the continued support of our dedicated educators and families, we are confident in achieving this goal.

Together we are and will continue to be Fort Belvoir strong!

This week, we celebrated the joy of reading with our students as a school community. In honor of "Read Across America," service members from various branches of the military joined us to share their love of reading. Dressed in their uniforms, they read books from our school library to students, creating a meaningful connection between literacy and service. Their presence not only emphasized the importance of reading but also highlighted the strong bond between our school and the military community.

We were honored to welcome nearly 200 service members who took time out of their schedules to inspire our young readers. Even more exciting, a couple of service members currently deployed overseas participated by reading to students virtually. One of these special moments is being featured on the Fairfax County Public Schools website, and we encourage families to check it out to see this incredible experience. This event was a powerful reminder of how reading brings people together, no matter the distance, fostering a lifelong love for learning.

Our first graders have been working hard and recently showcased their creativity and knowledge through an exciting animal project. Each student selected an animal of their choice to research, read about, and present to their peers and staff members. They eagerly shared fascinating facts about their chosen animals, demonstrating their growing skills in reading, speaking, and critical thinking.

To bring their projects to life, students designed detailed habitat dioramas using shoeboxes, carefully recreating the environments where their animals live. Their enthusiasm and dedication were evident in every project, and each student took great pride in their work. This engaging experience not only deepened their understanding of animals and their habitats but also fostered confidence and excitement for learning.

Magic Show at Fort Belvoir Primary

Students recently had the opportunity to experience an exciting magic show presented by Joe Romano. Combining the wonders of magic with the excitement of science, he captivated the audience with a variety of engaging experiments. His performance highlighted the theme that each of us can be a hero by embracing curiosity and discovering a passion for science. The show not only entertained but also encouraged students to see science in a fun and inspiring way.

We hope this experience sparked curiosity and excitement among our students, motivating them to explore scientific concepts beyond the classroom. We are thrilled to share that Joe Romano will be returning next month with a brand-new show designed specifically for our first and second-grade students. We look forward to another captivating performance that will continue to ignite a love for learning and discovery.

📐 Breaking Down the Budget: Supporting Academic Growth and Algebra by Eighth Grade

The FCPS Fiscal Year (FY) 2026 Proposed Budget invests in academic growth and excellence for each and every student, which is one of the priorities of the FCPS Strategic Plan

Since the 2023-24 school year, FCPS has seen a 9.5% increase in eighth graders taking Algebra I or more advanced math and a 6.8% increase in fifth graders in advanced math.

Studies show that students who complete algebra in middle school have more opportunities to take advanced math and science courses in high school. This can open up new academic paths for students! Watch a video that shows why eighth grade algebra matters

We are making a BIG splash with our literacy data! Our students have shown tremendous progress, with literacy growth increasing from 39% in the fall to an impressive 58% now. This means more students are reading on grade level, as measured by the VALLSS data. Their hard work, along with the dedication of our teachers and staff, is truly paying off!

Students across all three grade levels are exceeding expectations, with second grade leading the way at an outstanding 63% growth. This remarkable achievement highlights the strength of our instructional practices and our commitment to literacy success. Author Jacqueline Davies

We are thrilled to share that Jacqueline Davies, the author of The Lemonade War series, virtually spoke with our second graders. Students have been eagerly reading the series each day during snack time and are now on the fourth book. This special opportunity allowed them to engage with Ms. Davies directly, asking insightful questions about the characters and her journey as a children's author.

Ms. Davies graciously took time out of her busy schedule to speak with our students, driven by her deep appreciation for service members. Her passion for encouraging children to read was evident as she shared her experiences and inspired our young learners. It was a meaningful and memorable experience for everyone involved!

Breakfast with Families

We are excited to host our Breakfast with Families event! This special opportunity allows families to join their child for breakfast and enjoy a brief but meaningful moment together before the school day begins. We look forward to seeing you there!

Every Day Counts at Fort Belvoir Primary!

Help us reach our goal of 9% or less this year!

Regular attendance is a significant factor in a student’s success:

  • Chronic absenteeism  (missing 10% of the school year) correlates to low academic achievement;
  • Absenteeism is a powerful predictor of dropout rates;
  • Absenteeism has been linked to poor outcomes later in life.

To promote transparency and celebrate our progress, we will share bi-weekly attendance data and updates in our newsletter. Currently, our school has a chronic absenteeism rate of 17%. By highlighting this important information, we aim to keep families informed and engaged in our collective efforts to encourage regular school attendance.

Smart Phone and Watch Reminders

Just a reminder that students may not use their cell phones / smart watches during school hours.  Devices should either be in "airplane" mode or turned off during the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Students should not be texting their parents and/or friends during the school day.  We ask that parents also not text or call their child during the school day.

🧥 Keep Your Child Warm During Outdoor Activities

Winter weather is here! As a reminder, please make sure your child is dressed appropriately with a warm coat and other cold-weather clothing, so they can comfortably enjoy time outdoors. We monitor the weather for low temperatures, wind chill advisories and warnings, and weather advisories that may prevent children from being outside for activities like recess or physical education. The decision to go out for recess is one made by the principal at each school and can change throughout the day as conditions change.

Visit Fairfax County’s website for Winter Weather/Extreme Cold safety tips

If you need assistance getting cold-weather clothing for your family, please contact our family liaison, Dolores Elliott, at [email protected]

🤧 Protect Yourself and Your Community From the Flu

Fairfax County is experiencing very high levels of influenza (flu) illness. The Fairfax County Health Department reports that visits to emergency departments and urgent care centers for flu-like illness have increased, especially among children, and multiple flu outbreaks have occurred in our community and school settings. Read a letter from the health department

The health department suggests taking the following steps to reduce the spread of flu and other germs:

  • Cover coughs and sneezes. If you must be around others while ill, wearing a mask can help reduce spread.
  • Wash hands often with soap and water for 20 seconds. Use alcohol-based hand sanitizers when soap and water are not available (with supervision for younger children).
  • Clean frequently touched surfaces.

According to the health department, to help prevent or reduce the spread of illness it is important for individuals who are sick to stay home and away from others until symptoms improve and until they have been free of fever for at least 24 hours. Visit this Attendance webpage for guidance on when your child should go to school.

We are so thrilled about the hard work and dedication our students have shown with the new literacy curriculum. It has been inspiring to see their enthusiasm as they explore reading, writing, and critical thinking in new and exciting ways. The curriculum fosters a deeper understanding of language, allowing students to strengthen their phonemic awareness skills while developing confidence in their writing abilities. Their engagement and progress are a testament to their perseverance and love of learning.

As principal, I am incredibly proud to witness our students fully immerse themselves in literacy lessons. The new curriculum provides them with meaningful opportunities to express their thoughts through writing, expand their vocabulary, and refine their reading skills. Seeing their growth and excitement each day reaffirms our commitment to providing a strong educational foundation. We look forward to continuing this journey and celebrating their achievements along the way!

Families can learn more about the new literacy curriculum and other resources linked HERE.

Together we are and will continue to be Fort Belvoir strong!

Join us as we highlight school counselors' tremendous impact in helping students achieve academic success and planning for a career. Learn more about the role of school counselors in FCPS

Our school counselors, Mrs. Brogan and Mr. Kamali, work with students in various capacities, whether through classroom lessons, group sessions, or individual counseling.

Please encourage your child(ren) to make them a card, write a thank you note, or just take a moment to let our school counselors know how much you appreciate them!

Perfect Attendance Recognition!

Congratulations to our classes with the highest days of perfect attendance! Your commitment to showing up every day is truly commendable. We know that when students are in school, they have the best opportunities to learn, grow, and thrive. Keep up the fantastic work, and let's continue striving for excellence together!

Highly Impactful Social Skills for Students

As we embark on a new year, cultivating essential interpersonal skills is paramount for students. Each day, as part of our social-emotional learning curriculum, teachers are dedicated to instructing students on the art of meaningful engagement. Recognizing that these social skills are indispensable for future success, families are encouraged to extend these conversations beyond the classroom.

In an era dominated by technology, where virtual communication often takes precedence over face-to-face interactions, it is crucial that students are equipped with the ability to connect authentically. We aspire for our students to navigate conversations thoughtfully, leading with both their intellect and compassion, ensuring they excel in the interpersonal aspect of our increasingly digital society.

✨ FCPS’ Strategic Plan Goal 2: Safe, Supported, Included, and Empowered focuses on building school communities where student health and well-being are prioritized and student voice is centered.

Family Breakfast Day - February 21st

We are excited to host our Breakfast with Families event! This special opportunity allows families to join their child for breakfast and enjoy a brief but meaningful moment together before the school day begins. We look forward to seeing you there!

The Fort Belvoir Elementary Food Market continues to be a beacon of support in our school community, ensuring that families have access to essential food resources. Each month, we proudly host a free food market, offering fresh and non-perishable items to those in need. Last month, we were able to assist nearly 200 families, reinforcing our commitment to addressing food insecurity and fostering a sense of unity and care among our students and their loved ones.

We are excited to continue this vital initiative, with our next market scheduled for February 21st. This program would not be possible without the dedication of our volunteers and community partners, whose generosity helps make a meaningful difference in the lives of so many. We encourage all families who may benefit from this resource to take advantage of the opportunity and join us as we work together to support one another.

Make Sure Your Children Are Up-to-Date on Immunizations

Please make sure your child has all of their necessary immunizations. Remember, all students are required to be immunized against certain diseases to attend school in Virginia. This is an important part of keeping children healthy!

Starting Monday, May 19, students who have not provided proof of immunization may not be allowed to attend school. You can check your child’s immunization status and submit updated immunization information by accessing SIS ParentVUE

Please check with your healthcare provider to make sure your child is up to date on required immunizations for the 2024-25 school year. If your child needs an immunization, make an appointment with your healthcare provider, visit the Fairfax County Health Department website for a list of child immunization clinics, or view other Immunization Resources. Be wise and immunize!

We are thrilled to welcome Mrs. Eileen Delany as our new Assistant Principal at Fort Belvoir Primary! She brings a wealth of leadership experience and a deep commitment to student success.

As a former military spouse, Mrs. Delany has had the honor of teaching in a variety of military-connected communities, giving her a unique understanding of the needs of our students and families. She is dedicated to fostering a collaborative school culture rooted in respect, communication, transparency, and kindness.

Mrs. Delany is eager to join the Fort Belvoir Primary family, and we know she will be a fantastic addition to our team. She will officially begin her role in late February, so please join us in giving her a warm welcome when you see her!

Reducing Student Absenteeism

We need your help in reducing our chronic absenteeism rate, which currently stands at 15%. This year, our goal is to bring it down to 9% or less, and we are so close to achieving it! Regular school attendance is crucial for academic success, social development, and long-term opportunities. When students are in school consistently, they build essential skills, form positive habits, and set themselves up for a successful future.

Research shows that students who attend school regularly have a significantly higher chance of succeeding in life. Missing just a few days can add up, leading to learning gaps and missed opportunities for growth. By working together—families, teachers, and the entire school community—we can ensure that every student has the best possible chance to thrive.

Let’s make attendance a priority and reach our goal together!

Our Dolphins are making a BIG splash in math, showcasing their dedication and growth! Recently, students took the iReady assessment for Unit 4, and the results are remarkable. Second-grade students not only met the district's aim line of 68%, but exceeded it, with an impressive 74% achieving mastery or exceeding grade-level standards. This outstanding achievement is a testament to their hard work, as well as the commitment of our teachers and families in fostering a strong foundation in mathematics.

Although first-grade students came in just shy of the district's 69% aim line, reaching 65% in mastery or above, we are confident that continued focus and support will yield even greater success. As we embark on a new quarter of learning, the entire Fort Belvoir community remains optimistic and committed to empowering our students to achieve their full potential. Let's keep the momentum going, Dolphins!

Fort Belvoir Primary School Weeks at a Glance 1/24/2025

We are thrilled to introduce a new initiative at Fort Belvoir Primary Elementary School: buddy reading! Our second-grade students are partnering with kindergartners to share the joy of reading. This collaboration provides an opportunity for our second graders to strengthen their leadership skills while inspiring a love for reading in our youngest learners. By reading together, both grade levels benefit from a meaningful and interactive experience that supports literacy and builds confidence.

Our goal is to foster a shared passion for reading while creating a positive and supportive environment for everyone involved. For our kindergartners, having older peers as reading buddies offers encouragement and serves as a model of what they can achieve as they grow. For our second graders, it’s an opportunity to practice fluency, enhance communication, and build community. We are confident this program will be a favorite among students, promoting literacy in a way that’s engaging, educational, and fun!

Mid-Year Assessments

As we approach the midpoint of the school year, we will be conducting several assessments in January to evaluate student progress and make any necessary adjustments to their learning plans. Students in Grades 1 and 2 will participate in the math iReady assessment, providing valuable insight into their mathematical growth and areas for further development. Our multilingual learners will engage in the WIDA test, assessing their listening, reading, writing, and speaking skills to ensure they are progressing in their language acquisition. Additionally, all primary students will complete a midpoint language arts assessment using the VALLSS. Families will receive more detailed information about these assessments in the coming weeks.

Attendance during this time is crucial to support students' continued growth during the foundational phase of their education. Daily attendance ensures consistent learning experiences, which are critical for developing essential skills that lay the groundwork for future academic success. The primary years are pivotal in setting students on a path toward achieving their full potential throughout their schooling journey. We are kindly asking families to keep this in mind as we continue to ensure our students are thriving academically.

INSCOM Donation Appreciation

MSG Wilson, on behalf of the U.S. Army Intelligence and Security Command (INSCOM), generously donated clothing, books, and educational toys to support our community. The kindness displayed through this initiative reflects a deep commitment to uplifting others and fostering a spirit of unity and care.

We are profoundly grateful for this act of generosity, which will make a meaningful difference in the lives of many. INSCOM's dedication to serving not only on the global stage but also within local communities embodies the true essence of service and leadership. We extend our heartfelt thanks to MSG Wilson and INSCOM for their support and for setting a powerful example of giving back.

Pet Donation from Fort Belvoir Primary

During the month of December, students in the multi-age classroom worked on a heartfelt project by collecting pet items to donate to the Lorton Station Animal Shelter. We would like to extend our gratitude to our school community for their generous support in making this initiative a success. A variety of items were collected and presented to the shelter, where they were warmly received. The staff expressed deep appreciation and were touched by our students' act of kindness and compassion toward animals in need.

On Monday, our country will honor the life and legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., a leader whose unwavering commitment to equality and justice continues to inspire us. As a school community, we take pride in fostering an environment where all learners feel included, respected, and valued. Dr. King's vision of unity and hope resonates deeply in our halls as we strive to uphold these ideals every day.

This past week, our students engaged in meaningful lessons and activities to learn about Dr. King’s vital contributions to the Civil Rights Movement and his enduring message of compassion and courage. They explored the importance of his work in shaping a more equitable society and reflected on how we, as individuals and as a nation, can continue to grow by embracing empathy, kindness, and the pursuit of justice for all. Together, we honor Dr. King's dream and recommit ourselves towards building a brighter future together.

We are truly grateful for our dedicated custodial team! Their hard work and commitment have been invaluable in maintaining a safe and welcoming environment for everyone at Fort Belvoir Primary Elementary School. Over the winter break, they went above and beyond by thoroughly cleaning our building to ensure that students and staff returned to a pleasant and inviting learning space that embodies the pride we take in our school.

Recently, they have also worked tirelessly to clear snow from the sidewalks around our campus, ensuring the safety of our community. While much of the snow has been removed from the sidewalks and parking lot, we kindly remind everyone to exercise caution when walking on our grounds, as conditions may still be slippery in some areas. Thank you for helping us keep Fort Belvoir Primary Elementary School safe and exceptional!

Holiday Performance at INSCOM

Earlier this month, a few of our first-grade classrooms had the distinct honor of performing at the United States Army Intelligence and Security Command (INSCOM) tree lighting ceremony. This annual event served as a perfect platform for our talented students to showcase their musical abilities and spread holiday cheer through their heartfelt performance. Their enthusiasm and hard work made the occasion even more memorable and uplifting for everyone in attendance.

We are immensely grateful to Garrison Commander COL Stewart and CSM Hopkins for taking the time to join us at this special event. Their presence not only demonstrated their unwavering support for our school community but also highlighted the strong bond between Fort Belvoir Elementary and our military partners. It is through such collaborations and celebrations that we continue to strengthen our commitment to fostering a shared sense of pride and unity.

Welcome New Friends to Primary

It’s always a great day to be a Dynamic Dolphin! We are thrilled to welcome our newest students to Fort Belvoir Primary Elementary School. Joining our school community is a special milestone, and we are excited to support our students as they dive into a year of growth, friendship, and discovery.

This week, our “First Friends” program made a splash by hosting new students during their lunch period. These connections were full of shared stories, laughter, and mutual support as students bonded over their military ties and academic journeys. Building a welcoming community is central to what we do, and we’re proud to see these relationships already beginning to flourish.

Special Visitors at Fort Belvoir Primary

We are incredibly thankful to the Fort Belvoir Military Police Department for bringing holiday cheer to our campus! Two officers dressed as Santa Claus and the Grinch, creating a delightful unexpected surprise for our students. Their presence lit up the day, filling the school with excitement and joy. We deeply appreciate this moment that was sponsored by the Fort Belvoir military installation. It was  thoughtfulness and community spirit in making this moment so memorable for everyone.

Spreading Joy - American Legion 176

We would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the American Legion 176 for their generous donation. Their thoughtful contribution of food and other essential items has made a meaningful impact on the lives of our active military families. This act of kindness exemplifies the spirit of community and support that we value so deeply as a school.

Supporting Families at Fort Belvoir Primary

Fairfax County Public Schools Strategic Plan Goal #2 emphasizes the importance of fostering an equitable school community where student health and well-being are prioritized, and student voice is centered. To achieve this goal, schools must embrace a needs-based distribution model that ensures equity in the allocation of resources and support. This approach requires a conscious effort to avoid assumptions about which families may be in need and instead promotes a proactive, inclusive, and accessible method for all families to request assistance as needed.

At Fort Belvoir Primary Elementary, we are committed to being a beacon of support for our community. We recognize that equitable access to essential resources plays a vital role in student success. Our mission is to provide families with the necessary supplies and resources to create a stable and supportive learning environment for every child. To better understand and meet the unique needs of our families, we encourage any family in need of potential resources to complete the form linked HERE. This initiative ensures that every student has the opportunity to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally in a community that values and prioritizes equity and well-being.

A Message From The Principal

Our annual Fun Run was a spectacular event that brought joy and excitement to students of all ages! Hosted by our dedicated PTO, the fundraiser transformed our gym into a neon wonderland filled with vibrant lights and energetic music from a live DJ. Students ran laps with smiles on their faces, moving to the beat of their favorite songs. The atmosphere was electric, filled with laughter and positive energy as students encouraged one another and celebrated each milestone lap. It was truly a memorable experience for all who participated.

This year, our fundraising goal was set at $25,000. While we did not reach that target, the spirit of the event remained the true measure of success. Students embraced the opportunity to come together, stay active, and support their school community. The heart of the FunRun has always been about creating lasting memories and promoting a sense of unity.

Thanks to the incredible efforts of the PTO, students, staff, and families, the event was a resounding success in every way that matters most.

Together we are and will continue to be Fort Belvoir strong!

You have to be in it to win it! Throughout the entire month of December, we are encouraging students to show their school spirit as part of our effort to boost attendance. To make things even more exciting, we are hosting a month-long school spirit event. Fort Belvoir Elementary Annual Toy Swap!

The Toy Swap was a major success! Families from across our community came together, generously donating gently used toys for others to enjoy. The overwhelming participation and spirit of giving showcased the heart of our Fort Belvoir family. Moments like these remind us why we are "Fort Belvoir Strong" — a community rooted in kindness, connection, and shared support for one another.

First Grade Winter Concert!

The Winter Concert was an outstanding showcase of our talented first-graders, who delighted the audience with their heartfelt renditions of beloved holiday songs. The joy in the room was palpable as family members could be heard singing along, creating a heartwarming sense of community. This memorable event would not have been possible without the hard work and dedication of our exceptional music teachers, Ms. Amanda Maguire and Ms. Hailey Schmitt. Their passion for music and commitment to our students were evident in every note, as they skillfully guided the children in preparation for this special performance. We are incredibly grateful for their efforts in making the concert a resounding success.

Breakfast with the Grinch

Breakfast with the Grinch was an absolutely outstanding event! This past weekend, the room was filled with the joyful energy of numerous families coming together to support our PTO. Laughter, smiles, and holiday cheer were in abundance as children and parents enjoyed delicious breakfast items from IHop Pancake House and created memorable moments with the Grinch himself. The sense of community and togetherness was palpable, making it a heartwarming start to the festive season. Events like these not only bring joy but also strengthen the bond between our school, families, and the broader community.

The holiday season has officially begun on Fort Belvoir! It was so wonderful to see so many families at Winterfest 2024 this past Saturday. This event provided a special opportunity for us to come together and celebrate as a school community. As the principal, it was heartwarming to witness families connecting and enjoying such a joyous occasion. The tree lighting ceremony was a fantastic way to kick off the holidays, and I couldn’t agree more with COL David Stewart’s sentiment — our tree stands not just as a symbol of the holidays, but also as a beacon of unity.

We are truly a purple military base, united in our commitment to ensuring that moments like these will continue to be celebrated for years to come as proud Americans! The sense of togetherness on Fort Belvoir is truly something special, and it's a reminder of the strength and resilience of our military families. As we look ahead to the holidays, let us remember the importance of unity and community, and the lasting impact we can have when we celebrate these meaningful moments together.

Together we are and will continue to be Fort Belvoir strong!
