A Message From The Principal

During this season of joy, gratitude, and giving, we extend our warmest wishes to each member of our Fort Belvoir Primary Elementary School family. Holiday Performance at INSCOM

Earlier this month, a few of our first-grade classrooms had the distinct honor of performing at the United States Army Intelligence and Security Command (INSCOM) tree lighting ceremony. This annual event served as a perfect platform for our talented students to showcase their musical abilities and spread holiday cheer through their heartfelt performance. Their enthusiasm and hard work made the occasion even more memorable and uplifting for everyone in attendance.

We are immensely grateful to Garrison Commander COL Stewart and CSM Hopkins for taking the time to join us at this special event. Their presence not only demonstrated their unwavering support for our school community but also highlighted the strong bond between Fort Belvoir Elementary and our military partners. It is through such collaborations and celebrations that we continue to strengthen our commitment to fostering a shared sense of pride and unity.

Welcome New Friends to Primary

It’s always a great day to be a Dynamic Dolphin! We are thrilled to welcome our newest students to Fort Belvoir Primary Elementary School. Joining our school community is a special milestone, and we are excited to support our students as they dive into a year of growth, friendship, and discovery.

This week, our “First Friends” program made a splash by hosting new students during their lunch period. These connections were full of shared stories, laughter, and mutual support as students bonded over their military ties and academic journeys. Building a welcoming community is central to what we do, and we’re proud to see these relationships already beginning to flourish.

Special Visitors at Fort Belvoir Primary

We are incredibly thankful to the Fort Belvoir Military Police Department for bringing holiday cheer to our campus! Two officers dressed as Santa Claus and the Grinch, creating a delightful unexpected surprise for our students. Their presence lit up the day, filling the school with excitement and joy. We deeply appreciate this moment that was sponsored by the Fort Belvoir military installation. It was  thoughtfulness and community spirit in making this moment so memorable for everyone.

Spreading Joy - American Legion 176

We would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the American Legion 176 for their generous donation. Their thoughtful contribution of food and other essential items has made a meaningful impact on the lives of our active military families. This act of kindness exemplifies the spirit of community and support that we value so deeply as a school.

Supporting Families at Fort Belvoir Primary

Fairfax County Public Schools Strategic Plan Goal #2 emphasizes the importance of fostering an equitable school community where student health and well-being are prioritized, and student voice is centered. To achieve this goal, schools must embrace a needs-based distribution model that ensures equity in the allocation of resources and support. This approach requires a conscious effort to avoid assumptions about which families may be in need and instead promotes a proactive, inclusive, and accessible method for all families to request assistance as needed.

At Fort Belvoir Primary Elementary, we are committed to being a beacon of support for our community. We recognize that equitable access to essential resources plays a vital role in student success. Our mission is to provide families with the necessary supplies and resources to create a stable and supportive learning environment for every child. To better understand and meet the unique needs of our families, we encourage any family in need of potential resources to complete the form linked HERE. This initiative ensures that every student has the opportunity to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally in a community that values and prioritizes equity and well-being.

Our annual Fun Run was a spectacular event that brought joy and excitement to students of all ages! Hosted by our dedicated PTO, the fundraiser transformed our gym into a neon wonderland filled with vibrant lights and energetic music from a live DJ. Students ran laps with smiles on their faces, moving to the beat of their favorite songs. The atmosphere was electric, filled with laughter and positive energy as students encouraged one another and celebrated each milestone lap. It was truly a memorable experience for all who participated.

This year, our fundraising goal was set at $25,000. While we did not reach that target, the spirit of the event remained the true measure of success. Students embraced the opportunity to come together, stay active, and support their school community. The heart of the FunRun has always been about creating lasting memories and promoting a sense of unity.

Thanks to the incredible efforts of the PTO, students, staff, and families, the event was a resounding success in every way that matters most.

The joy in the room was palpable as family members could be heard singing along, creating a heartwarming sense of community. This memorable event would not have been possible without the hard work and dedication of our exceptional music teachers, Ms. Amanda Maguire and Ms. Hailey Schmitt. Their passion for music and commitment to our students were evident in every note, as they skillfully guided the children in preparation for this special performance. We are incredibly grateful for their efforts in making the concert a resounding success.

The holiday season has officially begun on Fort Belvoir! It was so wonderful to see so many families at Winterfest 2024 this past Saturday. This event provided a special opportunity for us to come together and celebrate as a school community. As the principal, it was heartwarming to witness families connecting and enjoying such a joyous occasion. The tree lighting ceremony was a fantastic way to kick off the holidays, and I couldn’t agree more with COL David Stewart’s sentiment — our tree stands not just as a symbol of the holidays, but also as a beacon of unity.

We are truly a purple military base, united in our commitment to ensuring that moments like these will continue to be celebrated for years to come as proud Americans! The sense of togetherness on Fort Belvoir is truly something special, and it's a reminder of the strength and resilience of our military families. As we look ahead to the holidays, let us remember the importance of unity and community, and the lasting impact we can have when we celebrate these meaningful moments together.

Great things are always happening at Fort Belvoir Primary Elementary! Before our Thanksgiving break, our second-grade teachers hosted our annual Balloons over Broadway Parade. This event is our school’s version of the famous Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade. The second-grade students read the book Balloons over Broadway with their classroom teachers and designed their very own balloons for the parade. It was such a joy for the entire school to experience the excitement of seeing all the beautiful and creative balloons designed by our students.

As part of the celebration, second-grade families were invited to join the parade and walk alongside their students. This event was a wonderful way to lead into the Thanksgiving break and foster a sense of community within our school. We also want to express our gratitude to our amazing PTO for their unwavering support. The PTO members dressed as turkeys and strutted down the hallways, leading our parade with enthusiasm and spirit!

Families are encouraged to review the book linked HERE with their student.

A Message From The Principal

Our annual Thanksgiving Luncheon was a huge success, and we want to extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone who attended. Your continued support for our school is truly overwhelming, and it was wonderful to see our community come together in such a meaningful way. A special shout-out goes to our volunteers who went above and beyond, from setting up tables and decorating the cafeteria and gym and to spending time with students who did not have family members with them.

We were especially moved by the kindness of one father who, not only attended the luncheon, but also chose to eat lunch twice—once with his child and once with two students who were not his own. Acts of selflessness like this are what create the loving, supportive environment that defines our school community. Thank you again for making this event so special!

Highlights from the Principal Coffee

We would like to extend our sincere thanks to everyone who continues to engage in our monthly meetings with Dr. Jemison, our principal. Your active participation is crucial in ensuring we work together to address the various issues impacting our school community. These meetings provide an important platform for collaboration and communication, and we appreciate your commitment to making our school a safe and supportive environment for all.

In November, we had the privilege of inviting Michelle Mairon, the supervisor assigned to Fort Belvoir from the FCPS Department of Transportation, to speak with our parents. Michelle shared valuable insights into how transportation concerns are being addressed, including the issue of buses speeding while on the base. To tackle this matter, Michelle has asked families to email her office directly at [email protected]. She and the team are committed to addressing this issue promptly to ensure the safety of our students and community members.

Additionally, we discussed the handling of lost items on the bus. Moving forward, bus drivers will now bring any lost items to the schools, where they will be placed in the lost and found. Families will have one month to retrieve these items before they are donated to charity. Finally, we want to emphasize the seriousness with which transportation takes inappropriate behavior. The school and transportation services work closely to determine appropriate consequences, as outlined in the FCPS Student Rights and Responsibility (SR&R) handbook. The first offense we host a conversation with families and the second time students are suspended from the bus.

Students who are repeat offenders will face more severe consequences, and families will be promptly notified of any inappropriate behaviors. The safety and well-being of our students will always remain our top priority.

Fort Belvoir Primary Outstanding Employees

We take immense pride in recognizing the exceptional contributions of our Fort Belvoir Primary employees. In the photo above, we celebrate Angie Day, Second Grade Teacher, Beth Nanguata, Multi-age Teacher, Dee Idlet, Social Worker, and Dolores Elliott, Family Liaison. These outstanding individuals were chosen by their peers to represent our school, and their names will be submitted to the regional team for potential selection to represent the entire region. Should they be chosen at the regional level, they will then have the opportunity to move forward to represent Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) on a broader scale.

While we commend these four individuals, we want to express our pride in our entire staff, acknowledging the many unsung heroes who contribute significantly to the well-being and education of the children in our school. Though we couldn’t highlight everyone, we appreciate the collective efforts that make our school community thrive. Your dedication and hard work are truly what make Fort Belvoir Primary a special place for both students and staff alike.

FCPS CARES Submissions for Fort Belvoir Primary

Mrs. Kim, First Grade Teacher

FCPS CARES submission:

"Mrs. Kim strikes an extraordinary balance between kindness and firmness. She fosters a supportive, nurturing environment that allows students to feel safe and valued while maintaining clear expectations. She handles essential matters like encouraging students to keep their hands to themselves, staying on task, and respecting classroom norms with firm but caring authority that resonates with children. Additionally, Mrs. Kim works incredibly well with students who may have behavioral challenges. Her patience, empathy, and tailored strategies ensure these children feel supported, while also reinforcing a positive and structured classroom dynamic for all. This is no small feat, and it reflects her deep understanding of both educational best practices and her students’ individual needs. Mrs. Andress-Day, Second Grade Teacher

FCPS CARES submission:

"Mrs. Andress is an amazing teacher who goes above and beyond to not only connect with her students, but to engage parents and families as well. The growth my child has made so far this year is without a doubt due to the incredible support and care of a great teacher. I appreciate how deeply she cares for the well-being of each of her students. Mrs. Andress is someone that I know my child can count on, that I myself as a parent can count on, and the teachers and staff that she works with can count on. I have always felt like my child has had great teachers, but Mrs. Andress is in a league of her own. I am so thankful that my child was placed into Mrs. Andress’ class."

This information is posted on the FCPS CARES webpage, accessible at https://www.fcps.edu/news/fcps-cares-november-2024.

Attendance

We wanted to take a moment to acknowledge and sincerely thank you. Due to your incredible partnership and support, we are elated to share that we have achieved a significant milestone for our school community. As of today, the chronic absence rate for our school has dropped from 17% to 13%! This is an incredible feat given the tremendous amount of work that went into this change from our families and students. We know that the road ahead of us will continue to challenge us as we work towards our ultimate goal of reducing absenteeism to 9% or lower. Every day that a child attends school is another chance for greatness. We take heart in knowing that we are allied with an incredible community of families here at Fort Belvoir Primary that will never abandon the mission of student success.

Fort Belvoir Primary Elementary School was honored by the FCPS School Board for being named a Third-time Virginia Distinguished Purple Star School. This incredible achievement reflects the dedication and hard work our staff puts into supporting our military-connected families within our school community. The recognition was made even more special by the personal congratulations from Mr. Dune, representative for the Mount Vernon district, and Ms. St. John-Cumming of the Franconia district. We were also pleased to have Fort Belvoir's Garrison Commander, COL David Stewart, in attendance, along with Garrison Command Sergeant Major, CSM Hopkins, and Ms. Laxton, Principal of Upper to celebrate our  accomplishment.

A special thank you goes to our very own Ms. Brogan, School Counselor, and Ms. Larson, Multi-Language Teacher, along with others who worked diligently to submit the application on behalf of the school. Their commitment and perseverance paid off tremendously, and we could not be more grateful for their efforts. This recognition is a true testament to the outstanding work happening at our school. I am incredibly proud of our hardworking staff and our ongoing support from the school community. It is an honor to lead such a dedicated team!

On Thursday, November 14th, our students participated in a meaningful event to honor Ruby Bridges' walk for equality. During their specials time, students walked around the campus holding a banner created by our Family Ambassadors. The walk was a powerful reminder of the importance of standing up for justice and equality. At the conclusion of the walk, each student signed the banner, making a personal pledge to stand for excellence and commit to making positive changes in the world around them.

Education, as emphasized during the event, is the key to opening doors and creating opportunities for all. No matter the age, the students learned a valuable lesson: they have the ability to make a difference in our society. The event was a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the courage of Ruby Bridges and inspire our students to carry that legacy forward in their own lives.

Families are encouraged to learn more about Ruby Bridges using the link HERE.

Virginia’s Civilian Aide to the Secretary of the Army

We were thrilled to have the Virginia Civilian Aide to the Secretary of the Army, Ms. Nancy Jean-Louis, visit our school. It was an honor to showcase the incredible work being done at Fort Belvoir Primary Elementary. During her visit, Ms. Jean-Louis had the opportunity to witness the exciting and innovative activities taking place throughout our building. She was particularly impressed by the high level of student engagement across various classrooms.

Our students were eager to share what they are learning in literacy, and their enthusiasm left a lasting impression on Ms. Jean-Louis. She took time to interact with them, hearing directly from the students about their projects, discoveries, and achievements. It was a wonderful experience that highlighted the dedication of both our students and staff to fostering a dynamic and enriching educational environment. She intends to share her experience with the Secretary of Army and others on her team.

We are thrilled to share that our award-winning First Friends Ambassadors have officially begun welcoming students to Fort Belvoir Primary Elementary School! This dedicated group of students play a vital role in creating a warm and inclusive environment by engaging with students new to our school during lunchtime. We are proud to announce that this program has been recognized by the Virginia Purple Star Committee for its outstanding contribution to the Fort Belvoir Primary school community. A Message From The Principal

Veterans Day holds a special significance at Fort Belvoir Primary Elementary, and we take pride in celebrating it every day. It is crucial for our students to understand the incredible honor it is to be the child of a military service member. Each day, their parents stand on the front lines, bravely protecting our freedoms and providing the opportunities we often take for granted. Recognizing this sacrifice fosters a sense of appreciation and respect within our school community.

This year, our Veterans Day celebration was filled with activities that highlighted the life and experiences of soldiers. Students participated in various engaging events, with their families cheering them on and sometimes providing guidance. This sense of togetherness not only made for a fun day but also deepened our students' understanding of the importance of service and sacrifice. It was a memorable occasion that reinforced the values of honor, gratitude, and community that we cherish at Fort Belvoir Primary Elementary.

Fort Belvoir Primary Spotlighting Veterans

"We are incredibly proud of our veterans who have served or are currently serving in the military. We invite families to view a presentation linked here, showcasing some of our finest service members and their dedicated family members. Their commitment and sacrifices deserve our recognition and appreciation." We proudly thank you for your service!

Read with a Veteran

Several of our classrooms had the privilege of hosting a veteran or active-duty soldier who read to the students. This initiative provided a meaningful opportunity for students to connect with the term "veteran" and understand its significance. They were encouraged to ask questions, fostering an interactive and educational environment.

COL(R) Daxe captivated the students' attention as he animatedly brought the characters in his book to life, using different voices that kept the children fully engaged and entertained. We are extremely appreciative of everyone that participated!

Fort Belvoir Celebrates Veterans Day

"Honoring our heroes: COL David Stewart, Fort Belvoir Garrison Commander, and special guest speaker Lt. Gen. Brian Eifler, Deputy Chief of Staff, G-1, present the wreath at the Fort Belvoir Memorial during the Veterans Day Observance. A solemn tribute to the courage and sacrifices of our veterans."

Coffee with the Principals

The FCPS Department of Transportation will attend our upcoming Principal Coffee, providing a valuable opportunity for families to share concerns and ask questions about bus services. This session allows parents to voice their thoughts directly to the team as we work together to address each concern collaboratively. We look forward to seeing you there!

Families can learn more about FCPS Department of Transportation using the link HERE.

On Thursday, November 14th, our school will join institutions across the nation in commemorating Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day. Ruby Bridges was a courageous young girl who exemplified perseverance in the face of adversity, standing up for her right to education during a time when equality was not afforded to all. She was also the same age as several of our students when she embarked on this historical moment. Her story serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of resilience and determination in the pursuit of justice.

To honor Ruby's legacy, our students will participate in a symbolic walk around the campus, reflecting on the significance of her actions. Each student will have the opportunity to sign a commemorative banner, marking their commitment to embracing bravery in all its forms. This event is not just a tribute to Ruby Bridges, but also an invitation for our students to recognize and celebrate their own courage and the positive impact they can have on their community and the world.

Families are encouraged to learn more about Ruby Bridges using the link HERE.

Student Artwork at Commissary

We are thrilled to announce that our students' artwork will be on display at the Fort Belvoir PX and commissary! Thanks to Al Brooks, the Commissary Manager, we have the opportunity to showcase our students’ creations for everyone to admire. This collaboration not only allows the community to connect with the school but also gives our students a chance to take pride in their work and share it with family and friends.

In honor of Veterans Day, students at Fort Belvoir Primary have created a special project by tracing their hands to replicate the United States flag. This creative endeavor highlights their appreciation for our nation's heroes and serves as a heartfelt contribution to the celebration of Veterans Day.

We encourage everyone to visit the commissary to see the students' impressive work and join us in honoring our veterans.

November is recognized as Native American Heritage Month, a time to celebrate and honor the rich cultures, histories, and contributions of Native Americans. Throughout our building, we will be highlighting a selection of carefully chosen books that feature Native American voices and perspectives. These books, approved by our district, serve not only as educational resources but also as windows into a vibrant heritage that enriches our community.

As we engage with these stories, we remind our students that each person is unique and has valuable experiences to share. By embracing the diverse narratives found in these books, we foster an environment of respect and appreciation for all cultures. This initiative aligns with our commitment to inclusivity, encouraging students to explore and learn from the experiences of others while celebrating their own identities.

We are asking students to get excited about reading their school’s library books and those located in the Fort Belvoir Army Library. Reading allows students to find joy within a book!

Thanksgiving Luncheon at Fort Belvoir Primary

We warmly invite families to join us for our annual Thanksgiving Luncheon. This event offers a fantastic opportunity for families to come together, connect with one another, and enjoy a delicious meal in a festive atmosphere. Your presence will make the occasion even more special as we celebrate the spirit of gratitude and community. We look forward to sharing this wonderful experience with you!

Sharing Warm Thoughts

Our hearts are filled with both joy and sadness as we announce that Ms. Flint and Ms. Gordon have decided to pursue new positions in alignment with their career goals. Ms. Flint will be joining Upper as a new assistant principal, a role that will allow her to work closely with grade levels involved in state testing. This opportunity will enable her to share her expertise and make a significant impact on student achievement.

Meanwhile, Ms. Gordon will take on a leadership position within the FCPS Early Childhood office. Her wealth of knowledge and experience in Special Education will be invaluable, providing opportunities for others to benefit from her insights and guidance. While we will greatly miss these two remarkable leaders in our daily lives, we know they will forever remain in our hearts and minds. Students were able to shower them with lots of hugs and kind words this past week. We wish them both the best as they embark on this exciting new journey.

Participants are encouraged to share their thoughts, ask questions, and learn more about the boundary review process.

Please visit FCPS’ website for meeting dates, locations, and other information. Sign up for the School Boundary Review newsletter for updates.

A Message From The Principal

It's starting to feel like fall on our campus, and the vibrant colors of the season are inspiring our students in wonderful ways! During STEAM class, they are actively exploring the outdoor environment, discovering the intricate details of nature as they learn. This hands-on approach not only enhances their understanding of science and art but also fosters a deep appreciation for the changing seasons.

In art class, students are taking their creativity to the next level by crafting imaginative leaf people. Using a variety of leaves, they are bringing their unique characters to life, blending nature with artistic expression. We invite families to come and admire this beautiful artwork displayed outside of their child's classroom during parent-teacher conferences. It's a fantastic opportunity to celebrate our students' creativity and the wonderful spirit of fall on our campus!

Together we are and will continue to be Fort Belvoir strong!

Dr. LaZedrick (Zed) Jemison, Principal

Two students from the winning classrooms will be selected to take part in this exciting activity, while those who do not reach the goal will only have the opportunity to watch. Federal Impact Aid Survey

Return Your Federal Impact Aid Survey

FCPS is asking all families to fill out a Federal Impact Aid Survey. The form is available online in SIS ParentVUE. If you have not already filled out the form online, we will provide paper forms in November. Please be sure to return them by Friday, November 17

Completing this form for each school-aged child in every household is important, because information from this survey resulted in more than $4 million in funding last year from the U.S. Department of Education. These funds are used to support all Fairfax County public schools and centers.

Please watch this video and visit the Federal Impact Aid Survey page for more information.

Need to Register for ParentVUE?

Technical support for using ParentVUE or completing the survey online is available by submitting a Parent Support Request ticket. Fort Belvoir Primary is an Official Distinguished Purple Star School!

We warmly invite our families to join us at the upcoming FCPS School Board meeting taking place on Thursday, November 14th at 7:00pm, where we will be recognized as a Virginia Distinguished Purple Star School. We are kindly asking everyone to wear their military fatigue to show our support and pride in this achievement. This brief award ceremony is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate our hard work and dedication together, and we would love to have you all there to share in this special moment.

School Community Event Success!

Our school community is truly amazing! The PTO recently hosted its annual Trunk or Treat event, and it was a fantastic success, with thousands of families showing up in support. The enthusiasm and participation from everyone made the occasion special, creating lasting memories for our students and their families. We are extremely appreciative of this opportunity to come together and celebrate in such a fun and engaging way!

Spotlighting our Programs at Fort Belvoir Primary

Students in the multi-age program enjoyed a hands-on learning experience with a pumpkin pie activity integrated into their math lesson. Tasked with measuring ingredients, they practiced real-world math skills, from using measuring cups to calculating quantities. This engaging activity brought math to life and was both fun and rewarding for the students, as they experienced the satisfaction of seeing their calculations come together into a delicious treat. The lesson not only reinforced their understanding of measurements but also added a warm, seasonal touch to their classroom experience.

Breakfast with Fort Belvoir Primary PreK Families

Our PreK breakfast with families was a fantastic event! It created a warm and welcoming atmosphere where students and their families could connect and share a meal together. Experiences like this go a long way in building a strong sense of community and support for our young learners. It fosters relationships that enhance their educational journey, making school feel like a home away from home.

We are encouraging families to learn more about our amazing Early Childhood Program by using the link HERE.

Elementary School Language Arts Grading Updates

Our teachers have been hard at work teaching with the new Language Arts curriculum, and we are excited to help all of our students become strong readers and writers! This year we also have new assessments, which is how we check if your student needs extra help with reading and writing, and new Standards of Learning (SOLs).

Because of these changes, we are now teaching all of the Language Arts skills your child needs to know (and checking if they need extra help) throughout the whole school year, instead of different skills each quarter. While these skills will be new to your child in the beginning of the year, the goal is for your child to grow strong in all of their new skills by the end of the year.

This means that when you get your child’s progress report next month, it might look different. Your child’s teacher will give you more information on the new progress reporting and how we’re making sure your child is getting any extra help they might need. You can also find more information on FCPS’ Grading and Reporting webpage.

We will also have new ways for you to help your child practice their reading and writing skills at home. These resources are coming soon!

Ms. Mohabir’s New Assignment

We are saddened to announce that Ms. Mohabir, our Behavior Therapist from Fort Belvoir Hospital, will be temporarily leaving us as she takes on an assignment at the hospital. We understand that her absence may be felt, and we encourage families to reach out to their Primary Care Managers (PCMs) for mental health support.

Families seeking military support services can still contact the school to speak with a member of the Virginia MFLC. They are able to provide short term support for students and are in consistent collaboration with Fort Belvoir Primary Elementary. We are encouraging families to contact the Fort Belvoir Hospital Behavioral Health office for longterm support. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Fort Belvoir Hospital Behavioral Health Services

Families needing to enroll and/or transfer medical care to Fort Belvoir should contact the Patient Administration Office located within A.T. Augusta Military Medical Center in the Oaks Pavilion on the first floor (571) 231-3325 or 3326. Additionally, families are encouraged to follow-up with their Primary Care Manager (PCM) to advocate for Behavioral Health needs and the PCM can place a referral for BH/SBH services. For additional information about the School Based Behavioral Health program, please contact your child’s teacher or an administrator to learn more about the process.

❤️ Cancer Awareness Day at Primary

We want to extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who wore pink this past Wednesday. Our staff and students joined together in a wave of pink to show support for those bravely battling cancer. This year, one of our own students is putting up a strong fight, and the outpouring of compassion has been inspiring. Some students wrote thoughtful letters to the student and their family, expressing their encouragement and support. As a school community, we stand strong and united with this family, showing that they are never alone in this journey.

Next 3-Hour Early Release: Monday, November 18th at 1:00pm

A Message From The Principal

Our annual Book Character Parade was an incredible success! The energy and enthusiasm from both students and parents created a joyful atmosphere that highlighted our school community's love for reading. Seeing our students dressed as their favorite book characters was a delightful experience, bringing those beloved stories to life in the most creative ways.

This event truly brought so much joy to everyone involved. The smiles on the students' faces as they proudly displayed their costumes, and the excitement in the air as they paraded through the school, were unforgettable. It was heartwarming to witness the positive energy shared between students, staff, and parents, all united in celebrating a love for reading

We are especially grateful for the overwhelming support and large turnout of parents who came to watch the parade and cheer on their children. It is our goal to inspire a love for reading, and this event not only ignites excitement in our students but also strengthens the connection between school and home in promoting literacy. Thank you all for your continued support in making events like this so special!

Pink Out Day as a School Community!

Fort Belvoir is known not only as a "purple" military base, where families from all branches of service come together, but also as a compassionate assignment base, offering support for families facing unique challenges. At Fort Belvoir Elementary, we witness this compassion daily, rallying around students and families navigating difficult situations. Last year, our community supported two brave students fighting cancer, and we’re thrilled to share that both are now cancer-free and have joyfully rung the cancer-free bell, a celebration of their strength and resilience. Their journeys remind us all of the power of community in times of hardship.

This year, we continue to stand alongside those still battling illnesses, as our mission to support and uplift one another remains unwavering. To show our solidarity, we’re inviting everyone to wear pink on Wednesday, October 30th, as a symbol of our collective hope and determination to overcome cancer. In our close-knit military community, when one person is impacted, we all feel it deeply.

Together, we believe that by supporting one another, we can face and conquer any challenge. Families can find additional talking points linked HERE.

PROPEL STEAM Grant Awarded to FCPS

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) has been awarded a $1.5 million grant from the Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) through the Military-Connected Local Educational Agencies for Academic and Support Programs (MCASP). The funding will support the implementation of PROPEL STEAM (Promoting Rigorous Opportunities, Programs, and Education in STEAM Learning), a program designed to elevate mathematics and science education at Fort Belvoir Primary and Upper Elementary School.

PROPEL STEAM aims to enhance students' critical thinking, problem-solving, and analytical skills through innovative STEAM enrichment programming and hands-on learning experiences. By fostering engagement in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM), the program seeks to provide students with the skills necessary to thrive in an increasingly complex and technology-driven world.

This initiative will benefit all students at the two schools, with a particular focus on supporting the needs of military-connected students, ensuring they receive high-quality educational opportunities in mathematics and science.

Celebrating Attendance with “Leo the Lion”

We are thrilled to bring back the excitement of our attendance competition at Fort Belvoir Elementary! Our goal is to inspire students to be enthusiastic about coming to school every day. Each month, classrooms proudly display a sign on their door when everyone is present. The classroom with the highest number of perfect attendance days will receive a special award. Last month’s winners were treated to a fun-filled bubble party!

This month's winners—Ms. Willis, Ms. Dutton, Ms. Henderson, Ms. Hooper, and Ms. Aguon—got the chance to dance with our school mascot, "Leo the Lion." Our very own principal, Dr. Jemison, dressed up as Leo to help boost school spirit and get everyone excited about being in school!

We can’t wait to see what exciting reward November’s winners will receive. As we continue fostering this positive environment, we ask families to keep sending their students to school whenever they are healthy. Let's keep the momentum going!

Attend Today, Achieve Tomorrow is a saying we emphasize to students in FCPS! We encourage families to read more FCPS stance on attendance linked HERE.

Fort Belvoir Elementary School Food Market

We are thrilled to have hosted our first Food Market of the year, a wonderful initiative designed to support our Fort Belvoir families and enhance community bonds. This event allowed us to extend resources to families who benefit from additional assistance, reinforcing our commitment to a nurturing, inclusive school environment. We were honored to have Fort Belvoir’s Garrison Commander, COL Stewart, join us in recognizing the efforts and dedication of our school community in this endeavor.

The success of this event was made possible by the collaborative efforts of many generous volunteers. Members of the Fairfax County Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., Fort Belvoir Elementary Family Ambassadors, and our devoted parent volunteers all played essential roles in ensuring the smooth distribution of food. Together, they unloaded the food truck, organized supplies, and extended a warm welcome to families.

We are deeply grateful for their contributions, which helped make the Food Market a meaningful experience for everyone involved.
